How to Get to Tokyo from the Airport

To Metropolitan Tokyo from Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND)

If you fly to Tokyo, you will arrive at Narita or Haneda Airport. Haneda is 25 min from central Tokyo. Narita is approximately 70 min from Tokyo.

From Narita Airport

Narita Airport has more international flights and LCC flights.

1. DIRECTIONS FROM NARITA AIRPORT

Taxis from Narita Airport to Tokyo cost around/over JPY30,000.

As other options, limousine bus or the JR Narita Express (N’EX) is highly recommended!

1-1. Limousine bus

It offers the smoothest access back and forth between Narita Airport and downtown Tokyo, located some 60 kilometers apart.  Airport Limousine counters are located in the Arrival Lobbies (in front of the exit) of both Terminals 1 and 2.

After clearing Customs, please look for the Airport Limousine counters in the Arrival Lobby.  Buses from Narita Airport leave from the 1st floor. Tickets cost about JPY3,000 each, payable by cash or major credit card. 

Take the limousine bus to the central Tokyo. Buses leave approximately once every hour and take 90 minutes or so.

NOTE: you will be given a claim check for any luggage stowed. Please hold onto your ticket stub to re-claim your luggage!

1-2. JR Narita Express (N’EX)

For those of you with a Japan Rail Pass or JR East Pass, please take the JR NARITA EXPRESS to Tokyo Station. The train takes about 1 hour. For Rail Pass holders, there is no charge (the fare is normally JPY3,190).

Example case of staying near JR Tokyo Station/Ginza area.

  1. From the Arrival Lobby at Narita Airport, take the escalator or elevator to Level B1.

  2. Exchange your Japan Rail Pass Voucher or buy the ticket at the JR East Travel Service Center.

  3. Get your seat reservations for the next Narita Express for Tokyo Station.

  4. From Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi Exit or Yaesu Exit, take a taxi to your hotel. 


From Haneda Airport

Most domestic flights fly from/to Haneda. Narita Airport used to be the main international airport for Tokyo but the number of international flights has been increasing at Haneda Airport in these years.

2. DIRECTIONS FROM HANEDA AIRPORT

2-1. Taxi

Taxis are available either by meter or by fixed rate depending on the distance. To go to closer area to Haneda Airport, such as Ginza and Shinagawa, taxi will be available by meter. It cots about JPY7,600 from Haneda to Ginza including toll fee. Fixed-fare taxi service is also available for distanced area in Metropolitan Tokyo, such as Shinjuku or Shibuya. It costs JPY8,300 (toll fee will be added on it) to go to Shinjuku from Haneda Airport, for example, by the fixed fare. 2-2. Keikyu Line Train

Keikyu Line has good access to Shinagawa Station (approximately JPY300) or continue on the same train to the nearest train station. The train takes about 20 -25 minutes. Shinagawa Station is one of the major train stations in Tokyo.

From Shinagawa Station, proceed to Takanawa Exit Taxi stand and take a taxi. Taxi fare is approximately JPY2,000 to metropolitan Tokyo. This is the easiest way.

2-3. Monorail

Tokyo Monorail has direct access to Hamamatsucho Station (JPY500). It takes about 15 minutes.

From Hamamatsucho Station, taking a taxi is the easiest way. Taxi fare is approximately JPY1,900 to Tokyo area or JPY4,000 to Shinjuku area. However, finding a taxi may be a bit challenging compared to in Shinagawa as Hamamatsucho station area is in redeveloping period as of April 2023. Taxi can be found on the main road in front of North Exit.


From Metropolitan Tokyo to Narita Airport and Haneda Airport

To Narita Airport

JR Narita Express (N’EX) and Limousine Bus are convenient when you go to Narita Airport from the city of Tokyo.

3. Directions to Narita Airport

3-1. JR Narita Express (N’EX) train

All of the N’EX trains stop at Tokyo Station, and spread into 3 routes after stopping at Tokyo station. If you stay in Tokyo, it may be convenient for you to take a taxi from your hotel to JR Tokyo Station and change to N’EX.

It takes about an hour from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport and it costs about JPY3,070 (regular season/all reserved seat). Train schedule is about once in 30 minutes for the regular time of the day.

3-2. Limousine Bus

Limousine busses run from various cities and stop at major hotels in Metropolitan Tokyo. Please ask your hotel if you can ride a Limousine Bus from/near your hotel. It will cost you around JPY3,000 from Tokyo area and JPY 3,700 from Yokohama area (fees vary depending on the distance.) The bus will take you directly to Narita Airport.


To Haneda Airport

4. Directions to Haneda Airport

4-1. Taxi

Taxi is a convenient choice to go to Haneda Airport. It takes about 35 minutes from Ginza to Haneda Airport by taxi. The fare is approximately JPY7,600 by meter. While taxi from closer area to the airport, such as Ginza or Shinagawa, goes only by meter, fixed-fare taxi service is also available by reservation for distanced area in Metropolitan Tokyo, such as Shinjuku or Shibuya. Reservation is needed for the fixed-fare taxi to go to Haneda Airport. Please check the detail of Fixed-fare service at Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association and please talk to your hotel concierge for the reservation in advance.

4-2. Keikyu Line train

Keikyu is a good choice if you are around Shinagawa. It has direct trains to Haneda Airport with frequent schedule. It takes 10-15 minutes and fare is approximately JPY300. Please make sure to ride the train with “Haneda Airport” on the destination board.

4-3. Monorail

Monorail is available from JR/Monorail Hamamatsucho Station. It takes about 15 minutes to Terminal 3 (International) Station by Haneda Express and the fare is JPY500.
