Toyama
HIGHLIGHTS
Discover the cultural wonders of Toyama on a journey through sake, seafood, and centuries-old traditions. Tour three breweries—Masuizumi, Shiraiwa (IWA), and Wakakoma—where each sip reveals a distinct style and story.
Journey to the seaside town of Himi and savor the peak flavor of kan-buri (winter yellowtail / hamachi) at an exclusive, private ‘buri party’ with a chef’s cutting show. Immerse yourself in the flavors of tradition: a konka-iwashi (fermented sardines) lunch hosted by the sixth-generation head of a family-run producer and a sansai lunch (mountain vegetable) foraged in the spring by the owner of a century-old inn.
Explore an ancient temple with a striking image of a Buddhist deity carved into the rock 1,300 years ago, visit an old street dotted with wood-carving workshops, and learn about the ancient art of washi paper-making. At night, unwind in an onsen ryokan hot spring inn overlooking a tranquil river in the mountains.
On the final day, experience the charm of life in a snowy mountain village in Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Meet a local resident who has preserved a traditional Gassho-style house with a thatched roof, a living testament to centuries of heritage. As your journey through Toyama comes to a close, our farewell lunch will be accompanied by the haunting melody of a kokiriko performance, leaving you with lasting memories of this enchanting region.
