Toyama boasts a charm that is truly one of a kind. What makes this area so special is the perfect combination of mountains and ocean, located so close to one another, and the way in which the produce from this region is harnessed to create a cuisine that is truly unique. Toyama bay is also known as the fish bowl of Japan.
As you journey from the northern coastline and further south into the mountains, you will discover a subtle yet distinct shift in the flavors of the region's cuisine and sake – a testament to the rich and diverse ingredients that come from Toyama's natural environment.
Toyama is truly a feast for the senses, offering a gastronomic adventure that is as unforgettable as the landscape itself and following are just a few of the things we have in store.
Visit 3-4 of Toyama's unique breweries for tours and tastings. Venture to the small port town of Himi which is famous for having the best buri (yellowtail) in all of Japan. Enjoy a 'buri party style' dinner with local fisherman/ chef and townspeople.
Explore a 1300 year old cave like temple where Fudo Myo-o was carved on a huge stone, and experience a special mountain vegetable kaiseki lunch. Try your hand at making a sake cup at a famous tin / steel works, before heading deeper south into the mountains.
Our final evening will be spent at an onsen ryokan before taking a trip back in time and exploring Gokoyama on our last day. As always, you will eat and drink very well.
* This tour starts at JR Toyama Station and finishes at JR Shin-Takaoka Station. Travel to JR Toyama Station on Jan 20th and continuation to your next destination from JR Shin-Takaoka on Jan 24th are not included.
